Global airfreight rates experienced a decline last week, according to the latest data from TAC Index, a leading market price reporting agency. The global Baltic bongdaso vn Freight Index (BAI00), calculated by TAC, dropped by 4.1% for the week ending 24 February. Despite concerns over new tariffs and potential trade wars, the index remains significantly higher—up by 14.8% compared to the same period last year. This positions airfreight rates as relatively more robust than container shipping rates, which have seen substantial recent declines.

In China, airfreight rates to Europe and the United States fell during the week. Sources indicated that spot rates continued to trend downward. The Hong Kong outbound route index (BAI30) decreased by 1.4% week-on-week (WoW) but maintained a healthy year-on-year (YoY) increase of 19.5%. Similarly, the Shanghai outbound index (BAI80) dropped by 3.7% WoW while also recording a 19.5% YoY rise. Beyond China, rates from India to both Europe and the U.S. were lower. Vietnam showed mixed trends, with rates to the U.S. declining but those to Europe increasing.

From Europe, airfreight rates presented an upward trend to China and the U.S., though rates to Japan showed a slight decline. Frankfurt's outbound index (BAI20) saw a significant drop of 15.0% WoW following recent gains but remained up 9.2% YoY. London Heathrow’s outbound index (BAI40), on the other hand, increased by 5.2% WoW, maintaining a YoY gain of 8.2%.

In the Americas, the Chicago outbound index (BAI50) declined by 4.6% WoW, yet narrowly held a YoY increase of 2.0%. Overall rates from the U.S. decreased across all major destinations—including Europe, China, and South America—though most remained positive compared to the same period last year.
